☆Joint Supplements☆ What, Why, How?

Joint Supplements are an important part of keeping equine athletes in top shape. But some of them have huge words in them that may sound scary. Here are a few, what they are, and why they're important:

☆Hylauronic Acid (HA) - HA is a naturally occurring substance in your horses joints, connective tissues and skin. It is the substance that makes joint fluid 'sticky'. HA can attract up to 1000 times it's weight in water which is why it provides very important lubrication to joints and hydration of connective tissues and skin. It has been proven to reduce joint pain and aid in horses with arthritis.

☆Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) - MSM is used to lessen inflammation in joints and the gut and is commonly combined with other supplements like glucosamine and chondroitin. It can be used to help treat ulcers as well. MSM can be natural or synthetic and some research indicates it can help prevent joint degeneration. MSM supplements work by providing the body with extra sulfur for making methionine, which aids in processes like forming connective tissue, metabolizing foods and absorbing nutrients.

☆Glucosamine and Condroitin - Both Glucosamine and Condroitin are naturally occurring elements of cartilage which acts as cushions between the bones in joints. Glucosamine is an anti inflammatory and is commonly used to support horses with arthritis and joint pain. It is also used by the body to absorb certain kinds of fats that form cartilage. It is also a digestive aid. Condroitin helps rebuild cartilage and aid in recovery of tissue after injury or exercise.

☆Curcurmin/Turmeric - Curcurmin is a natural anti inflammatory and pain reducer and is commonly thought of as one of the most powerful herbs in existence. It has many of the same effects as drugs such as anti inflammatories and pain medicines,  without the harmful side effects. It has been proven to reduce arthritis pain and inflammation and is touted to help almost every system in the horses body.
